Francis Le Jau (1660-1717) was a French Huguenot minister who immigrated to America and became an influential figure in the Anglican Church. He served as a missionary in South Carolina and Georgia, working with Native American tribes and African slaves.
Le Jau played a significant role in the establishment of the first Anglican church in Georgia, Christ Church in Savannah. He also founded a school for Native American children in South Carolina and worked to promote literacy among slaves.
In addition to his missionary work, Le Jau was also a prolific writer. He translated and published several books and religious texts in both English and the Muscogee language.
Le Jau’s legacy as a pioneer in interfaith dialogue and education for marginalized communities continues to inspire scholars and cultural historians today.
